“The neophile” is a derivation from ‘neophilia’, a term that was used by, amongst others, German sociologist René König in his publication A la mode: on the social psychology of fashion (Seabury Press, 1973). Drawing on König’s explanation, the blogs’s title thus alludes to the symbiosis of fashion and novelty – and so, to the intended ethos of this blog which is to partially welcome the unknown and unfamiliar, off the beaten track. This blog briefly gathers – at irregular intervals – an arbitrarily eclectic selection of fashion-related news, notes, quotes, comments and recommendations. Of all kinds – political; cultural; scientific; low- and highbrow – while, occasionally, trying to tie up the past with the present.
It is a blog directed towards all sorts of different readers who are – genuinely or latently – interested in the field of fashion and, in a broader sense, of lifestyle and consumption. The idea is to shed light at some of the many perspectives of fashion not only as an industry but as cultural phenomenon of our everyday lifes. However, this comes always in small doses, in snippets rather than tomes.
